One of the landmarks of the
Patpong area is Caffe Di Roma. This
is a classy Italian restaurant and features huge glass windows
allowing diners a view of life outside (as well as outsiders a
view of just what everyone is having for dinner!)
A favourite is Cafe De Paris located on Patpong Soi 2, just a few metres
from Caffe Di Roma. The owner Bobby is a Patpong
institution and always makes sure there is a real French chef in
the kitchen. How he manages to do so for such a pittance,
is beyond us. You can get a very pleasant pepper steak for
a mere 250 baht.
Also in the area are a number
of British style bars including the Irish Xchange and O'Reilly's. These two Irish pubs both serve good food.
The Roadhouse BBQ on the corner of Suriwong Road and Rama
IV Road is just a 3 minute walk from Patpong and also serves
good, honest, US BBQ style fare. Bobby's Arms in
Silom Soi 4, a predominantly gay soi has reasonable Western
style food at affordable prices. For those on a real
budget, the Toby Jug is the cheapest of the Western style
pubs in the Patpong area. On the main Silom Road it has
what is called in Bangkok, an English teacher-friendly menu,
meaning low prices for everything!
There are a few other
interesting restaurants in the area, within a few minutes walk
of Patpong including the ever popular Somboon Seafood which is a favourite with many, including some visiting
dignitaries, such as, I believe, the Prime Minister of Japan who
once sneaked away from a congregation to eat there. On Soi
Sala Daeng is Anna's Cafe, which offers a slightly
Europeanised version of Thai food - this spot is always popular
and inexpensive. The best eatery in the area is arguably Zanotti's, the fine dining, though very reasonably priced
Italian restaurant on Soi Sala Daeng. It is about an 8
minute walk from Patpong.
And if you really
crave a taste of the West, all of the popular Western fast food
outlets are well represented. In the immediate area there
are two McDonalds branches, Burger King, Subway, KFC,
Pizza Hut, Swenson's, Haagen Daz, Baskin And Robbins as well as a number of
Thai fast food outlets too. Don't worry, you won't go hungry at
Patpong.
There used to be
a dearth of good coffee houses in Bangkok but now you can get
reasonable to very good coffee on almost every corner. Starbucks has opened branches up all over town and there are a
couple in the Patpong area, as well as various other small
coffee houses and cafes where a coffee generally tastes as
coffee should. Every good hotel has a cafe or a la carte
restaurant with good coffee available. |
